Course Description:
Dr. Nathan Tanner shares over a decade of clinical experience in airway-centered orthodontics, guiding colleagues beyond traditional extraction and retractive methods. With a focus on early intervention, functional appliances, and natural jaw development, this session will highlight practical strategies to improve patient outcomes, expand treatment possibilities, and elevate your practice with airway-focused care.
Learning Objectives:
Correct and guide an optimal environment for normal occlusal development in the all primary, mixed or permanent dentition.
Identify, correct and guide a developing malocclusion to a normal occlusion in the all primary dentition ages 2-5, mixed dentition or permanent dentition.
Understand the earliest times that intervention is possible to support healthy craniofacial development.
Perform orthodontic screening on patients starting as early as age 2 and gain competence in delivering a Tanner Airway Appliance at any age.
Explain why early intervention of adverse dental, skeletal, or soft tissue relationships may be preferable to delayed treatment which often require greater effort in the future.

Dr. Tanner graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and a minor in Japanese. He pursued his dental education at Oregon Health and Science University, completing his degree in 2007. His commitment to patient care was honed through extensive training, including an implant continuum at the Misch Implant Institute and a mini-residency in IV sedation with the Oregon AGD.
Dr. Tanner's journey into airway orthodontics began in 2010. Initially focusing on adult sleep apnea appliances, he expanded his practice to treat younger children, recognizing the importance of early intervention. In 2014, he became one of the first Myobrace certified providers in the United States, quickly building expertise in various appliance systems. Dr. Tanner participated in numerous training programs, including a General Orthodontics Residency study club focusing on Airway Orthodontics and Neuromuscular Dentistry with Cris Simmons, an Orthotropics mini-residency on airway and early jaw development with Bill Hang, and training on ALF/Crozat with the American Academy of Gnathological Orthodontics under Brian Hockel, Jack Hockel, and Darin Ward. By 2019, his passion drove him to personally innovate, crafting custom appliances. This led him to officially establish the Airway Center in 2020, where Dr. Tanner began teaching other doctors his system.
Transitioning from extracting premolars and wisdom teeth under IV sedation to pioneering techniques that encourage natural jaw development and create sufficient space for teeth alignment without extractions, he introduces appliance systems for children as young as two, emphasizing the importance of proper oral muscle function in overall airway health.
As an advocate for community involvement, Dr. Tanner has a track record of volunteer service, ranging from teaching oral hygiene to at-risk youth to providing essential free dental care clinics and running community-based events like the Kids Dash. His dedication to service remains a cornerstone of his professional and personal life.
When not in the clinic, Dr. Tanner enjoys running, camping, hiking, and spending quality time with his wife and five beautiful children.
His life's purpose is to empower and inspire others to achieve their full potential by communicating and teaching love, care, and optimism. Dr. Tanner is committed to advancing professional and public awareness of airway and breathing benefits and is passionate about sharing this knowledge with the world.
